The simple fact : I could not find a job even though I have plenty management/sales experience and speak 4 languages ! I have a MBA and am from The Netherlands live in the US and the only jobs I could accept were sales jobs (sales rep insurance cars salesperson (Yaagk! Sorry guys and girls) Also as a former CEO I was often told:" Overqualified" or some said: "A threat to whomever may hire you" HUHH?Oh, the list goes on, but that didn't help me. And all the quick rich schemes and scams out there I simply do not believe in.( MLM etc.)
Then I came to a point where I said: "Hmmm, I am running out of money, so better find something quick."So my search started:
Here is the first tip: Do or find something you know about. Why? Usually what you know is what you usually find interesting. What you find interesting is what you like doing or knowing. That! you learn the quickest !!! Makes sense no?
One day I was talking to one of my collegues and friends in Europe. He had just started a business on the internet, comparing Health Care companies like "the Lending Tree" for Mortgages and selling the names and lists of potential customers.(then new to Europe). I had made a suggestion about adding a legal aid plan to the products he compared. To me that sounded good for him as 80% of some of the countries populations have it, so he could compare those plans as well.
After our conversation I sat down and I asked my wife who is a US citizen. "What is legal aid and where do I get it?" Well, she had no idea. I lloked through the yellow pages in the newspaper and din't find anything. Then I called around some of my friends, same answers. But I also asked what if.... (you are being sued, have an accident, have disagreement overa bill, are being scammed, etc.) Always the same answer GET A LAWYER. Yeah right! and how much does that cost? Cause for a simple, less then a $500 matter of some sorts you will be paying your lawyer more then the case is worth. (happens to everybody, just think for yourself)
Moral of the story: You let it (these legal challenges or issues) go by and swallow the cost or loss.
Now, I used to be a CEO of a Financial Consultancy Agency (my licenses are useless in the US) and at times legal questions which clients had came up. We as a company provided names of companies where they could get help with a legal aid plan.(we did get paid for that too by those companies)
So I kinda knew about the idea. DING DING DING ! wakey wakey !
What is out there? What people want or need? What is affordable and gives me an income?(preferably residual). What do I know about it? Has an absolute minimum investment (less then $100) and makes me feel that I am doing something useful at the same time? Well I found my answer in Legal Aid!!! ===> PREPAID LEGAL
HERE IS WHY:
1. Less then 3% of the populations in the USA have Legal Aid and that in the most litigious society in the world!!!
2. It is affordable.
3. It is needed or wanted (see 1.).
4. I know about it (and used it several times myself in Europe)and think it is an interesting product.
5. It provides income.
So I searched the net that evening and made some calls the next day and weeded out company after company until I had one left: Prepaid Legal !
Why?
1. Well, the company is 35 yrs old, so they must have been doing something right.
2. It is on the NYSE (symbol PPD at about $45 a share) so it is legitimate.
3. They offer a residual income and pay immediately.
4. There pay scheme is one of the best in the country.
5. They have good support (for me that is) and have a good internet website.
So I found it. Hallelujah..... not !!! Oh Oh, selling it , no no no, not for me . I am not going to cold call family friends or knock on doors.
Guess what? I listened to a CD of one Mr. Olsen, and that made the second "click" in my mind.
HE SAYS: Do not sell. "You are the Messenger not the Message"
In a nutshell:
1. Talk to two people a day (I don't always)
2. Hand them a magazine (forbes, money mag, etc.with articles about Prepaid legal)
3 Or hand them a CD/DVD. Or just a business card
5. Expose ( whatever that means) the person to the product. In other words tell them
(less then 3to 5 minutes) what you do and basically leave it at that
.6.Send info to 2 persons not in your neck of the woods (thank you! email/internet
or even snailmail) a week.
See what happens. HUH ???? That's it ??
Well guess what, I do what he "preaches" and surprisingly people started asking questions (interest/curiosity kills the cat), usually within a week or so. Some about getting a legal plan some wanted to know more.
So bottom line is. It actually works. Not fast or like an explosion, but trickling in one after the other. So little by little I actually got money coming in.
Is it enough? No, no yet, but there is growth ! And growth means expansion and that keeps the meter running.
By the way: If you have a LENS, use it, just like I did (yep you made it all the way through, so something must be right)
Work on your internet skills, blogs, social networking(zubby.com. facebook, myspace) and so on.
